‘God, not a man’: A story of love and sacrifice, with no religion

India has an incredible range of religions, but its true believers have been driven to the fringes of the country’s political and religious landscape.

As the nation’s first ever Muslim Prime Minister Narendra Modi took power in May 2017, the country witnessed a major shift in the way India sees itself, with many Indians identifying with the country and its religious identity.

The next few years would see India’s identity and its place in the world grow increasingly contentious.

But as it has done for the past two centuries, India is still one of the most religiously diverse nations on earth.

Here are five stories of love, sacrifice and faith.

1.

A woman in Delhi who gave up her daughter in the name of God: In January, a 25-year-old woman named Asha Singh died at a hospital in New Delhi of complications from an infection.

She had been living with a chronic infection and her family had been praying for her survival.

On March 3, her husband Raman Singh took the girl to the hospital to be tested.

She was positive and he was rushed to the capital to be treated.

But he was pronounced dead three days later.

His wife Asha’s father, Raman, was also admitted to the intensive care unit.

When they went to the mortuary to inquire about his condition, the doctors told them that they could not help them.

As they waited for the authorities to respond, the family had to drive to a nearby park.

They then started praying.

“They had no idea how much I had lost, how much they were praying for,” said Asha.

They were overcome with emotions and tears.

They held each other and cried together.

The two sisters, both of whom have been working in public relations for the government, were also overwhelmed by their grief.

“We are a very poor family,” said the father, Rajeev.

“I could not believe my own daughter was dying.

The only thing we could do was pray.

We were so overwhelmed that we had to stop the service and leave the building.”

They took their two children to the crematorium.

A small group of people were also at the crematoria waiting for the cremation to begin.

“There was no one there,” said Raman.

“The family was not prepared for this.

There were no coffins, there were no arrangements made.”

When the cremations were finally underway, Ramane was the only one there.

The other two children, who had to be buried with their parents, did not make it to the ground.

Asha died in a hospital on March 5.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Asha and her two daughters.

Raman and his sister-in -law have filed a wrongful death complaint.

They are currently at a government hospital.

2.

A Christian family from Madhya Pradesh’s Meghalaya region: In December 2016, three men were sentenced to death in India for their role in the gang rape of a teenage girl in a village near the town of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The men, a Christian couple, had been drinking with their young son and their daughter when the attack happened in May 2016.

They left the village and went to a local market where the two men were waiting for a bus to return to the village.

The couple allegedly took the young girl and raped her while the boy sat in a nearby vehicle with them.

The girl’s father went to an adjoining house, where he saw a police officer in a black uniform and a woman in white sitting on a white sofa.

“As soon as he saw me, he shouted, ‘What are you doing here?’,” said one of his daughters, Abhi.

“He was in shock.

I told him, ‘We are going to go to the police station.'”

They left.

After they left, they went home and returned to the scene of the crime.

Two days later, they returned to their house.

They found the girls’ mother, who was severely beaten and badly injured.

She died on March 18.

“My parents and I are going back to the place where the attack took place to bury my daughter,” said Abhi, who is married to a Christian.

Abhi and her sister- in-law are at a local hospital.

They have filed the complaint against the police officer.

Abhijit, the eldest of the three men, is still in police custody.

3.

An elderly Christian family in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram region: An elderly Hindu family in the town known as “Rajputana” in the state’s Thiruvannamalai district has been living in poverty for years.

Many residents of the village are farmers, but the community is split between Christians and Muslims.

The elderly Christian families in the area are the backbone of the community and it is they who have traditionally provided the services
